FLOWSERVE Balance Drum (also known as balance disc or axial thrust compensator) is a precision-machined hydraulic element used within multi-stage centrifugal pumps to offset axial thrust. Inside a multi-stage pump, the pressure differential across each impeller stage creates an unbalanced axial force that drives the rotating assembly toward the suction side. Left uncorrected, this thrust overloads the bearings and causes early bearing failure together with mechanical seal damage.

The balance drum operates by sustaining a regulated high-pressure cavity on the pump discharge side. A thin fluid layer sandwiched between the rotating drum and the stationary balance disc produces a hydraulic counter-force that resists the impeller-generated thrust. Through correct selection of the drum outer diameter and balancing orifice dimensions, the hydraulic force can be tuned to almost fully neutralize the axial thrust — typically holding residual thrust below 5 percent of the total impeller thrust.

Typical failure patterns involve wear along the drum-to-disc contact face (caused by dirty fluid or dry operation), erosion from high-speed leakage flow passing the balance drum sealing lands, and cracking induced by thermal cycling. Our replacement balance drums are produced via FARO 3D laser scanning reverse engineering to faithfully duplicate the drum diameter, balancing hole configuration, and sealing land profiles — delivering an exact fit and correct thrust compensation characteristics.

All balance drums pass through exacting quality checks prior to delivery:

• Material mill certificate listing chemical composition verified to ASTM, DIN, EN, ISO, TOCT specifications
• Dimensional verification: drum outer diameter, balancing hole diameter and arrangement pattern, shaft bore, keyway, and critical sealing land surfaces
• Hardness testing conforming to material grade specifications
• Non-destructive examination: PT, RT, UT, MT depending on casting type
• Surface roughness measurement across drum sealing land areas
• Visual check for surface irregularities, burrs, and coating consistency
