Application Notes

• Load Voltage & Temperature Derating: DC operating voltage must be derated based on operating temperature.
• Protection Resistance: A 1K resistor is recommended for product testing processes (steady state leakage current, withstand voltage). For switching power supply circuits, a resistance of at least 3/V is recommended.
• Reverse Voltage: Tantalum capacitors are polarized and reverse voltage is forbidden. If unavoidable, the applied time must be minimized and not exceed specified voltage limits. Continuous reverse voltage is not permitted.
• Ripple Voltage: Sum of DC and ripple voltage peaks must not exceed rated voltage. Negative peaks must not exceed allowable reverse voltage.
• Ripple Current: Joule heat generated by ripple current affects reliability. Maximum allowable ripple current can be calculated based on power dissipation, ESR, and derating factors.
• Circuit Redundancy: CA45 (MnO2) can heat and burn with high current. CA55 (Conductive Polymer) can crack and fail. Circuit design should include redundancy for high reliability.
