Product Description and Purchasing Logic

The correct manufacturing condition can reduce machining cost. Hot-rolled bar is economical for larger diameters and components with generous machining allowance. Cold-drawn bright bar provides improved diameter control and surface quality for smaller and medium diameters. Peeled or smooth-turned bar removes the hot-worked surface and is often selected for shafting and large CNC blanks. Centerless-ground bar is used where consistent diameter, roundness, straightness and surface roughness are important.

Round bar orders should define diameter rather than nominal pipe size. For final shafts, also state required straightness, runout, surface roughness, machining allowance and whether the ends must be faced or chamfered. Critical rotating or pressure-retaining parts may require ultrasonic examination, hardness testing, macro examination or third-party witnessing in addition to the standard MTC.

Processing and Machining Guidance

Austenitic 304 and 316L should be machined with rigid setups and adequate feed to cut below the work-hardened layer. 303 is preferred when cycle time and chip breaking are primary concerns, but it sacrifices some corrosion resistance and weldability. Duplex 2205 needs controlled cutting parameters because of its higher strength. 17-4PH is commonly rough-machined in Condition A and aged after machining, unless the drawing requires a fully heat-treated condition before final grinding.

Material Selection Boundaries

A round bar diameter alone does not define fitness for a shaft. The buyer should confirm load, fatigue, wear, corrosion medium, temperature, required heat treatment and final surface condition. Ground diameter tolerances do not automatically guarantee shaft runout after asymmetric machining. For chloride-bearing service, material selection should consider pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress-corrosion cracking, not only general corrosion data.

Values are representative engineering references for common conditions. The applicable ASTM/EN standard, section size, ordered condition and MTC control acceptance. Grade 303 is frequently hardness-controlled under ASTM A582, so tensile values should not be assumed without the certified heat data.

FAQ
1. What diameter range is available?

Common straight round bar can be supplied from small precision diameters to approximately 300 mm. Larger sizes are normally produced by forging, rolling, peeling or turning and require grade-specific confirmation.

2. What is the difference between hot-rolled and cold-drawn round bar?

Hot-rolled bar is economical and suitable for machining with allowance. Cold-drawn bar normally has tighter size control, a brighter surface and higher cold-worked strength.

3. What is peeled round bar?

Peeling removes the hot-rolled surface using a cutting process. It improves surface condition and dimensional consistency while leaving suitable allowance for further turning or grinding.

4. Can round bar be supplied to h9 tolerance?

Selected grades and diameter ranges can be ground or drawn to ISO tolerance classes such as h9 or h10. The exact diameter, length, straightness and surface requirement must be reviewed together.

5. Is 303 suitable for marine shafts?

303 is selected mainly for machinability. Its sulfur addition reduces pitting resistance and weldability, so 316L, duplex or another grade is usually considered for demanding marine exposure.

6. Can you perform ultrasonic testing?

UT can be specified for large-diameter or critical round bar. The examination standard, acceptance class, scanning coverage and reporting format must be stated in the purchase order.

7. Can bars be supplied with machined ends?

Yes. Options include saw-cut ends, faced ends, chamfers, center holes and rough-turned ends, subject to drawing review.

8. How is theoretical round-bar weight calculated?

For stainless steel near 7.93 g/cm³, approximate kg/m equals diameter² in millimetres multiplied by 0.00623. Use grade-specific density for accurate purchasing calculations.

9. Can 17-4PH be supplied in H900 or H1150?

Yes, subject to size and standard. The order must state the exact aging condition because strength, hardness, toughness and corrosion behaviour change with heat treatment.

10. What packing is used for export?

Bars are bundled with steel straps and protective wrapping. Precision bars can receive end protection, oil or film protection, wooden cases and separation material to prevent surface damage.
