Product Description and Purchasing Logic

Hot-rolled square bar is suitable for structural fabrication and components requiring substantial machining allowance. Cold-drawn or bright square bar offers closer dimensions, improved straightness and a cleaner surface, making it useful for repetitive machining and visible fabrications. The corner radius must be reviewed because a rolled or drawn square bar does not have perfectly sharp corners. If a part requires sharp 90-degree corners, a machined or ground route may be necessary.

The RFQ should state the across-flat dimension, length, corner requirement, straightness, surface and final use. 303 can improve machining productivity for fastener and fitting components but is not preferred for welding or severe chloride service. 304 and 316L provide better fabrication and corrosion balance. 17-4PH may be selected for higher-strength keys and machine parts, but its exact heat-treatment condition must be specified.

Processing and Machining Guidance

Square bar can be cold-sawn, band-sawn, milled, drilled, keyed and polished. When machining long sections, clamping and material-removal sequence should minimize bow and twist. Austenitic bar work-hardens; sharp carbide tooling, sufficient feed and coolant are important. For martensitic or precipitation-hardening grades, rough machining is commonly completed in the annealed or solution-treated condition before hardening, aging and final grinding.

Material Selection Boundaries

Nominal square size does not define corner sharpness or diagonal tolerance. Buyers should not assume cold-drawn bar is stress-free, and final distortion after heavy machining must be considered. For load-bearing parts, confirm the material condition and mechanical test values rather than selecting only by grade name.

Values are representative engineering references for common conditions. The applicable ASTM/EN standard, section size, ordered condition and MTC control acceptance. Grade 303 is frequently hardness-controlled under ASTM A582, so tensile values should not be assumed without the certified heat data.

FAQ
1. How is square bar size specified?

Specify the across-flat dimension, for example 25 × 25 mm, plus length. Add corner radius, diagonal tolerance and straightness when these features affect the final part.

2. Are square-bar corners sharp?

Hot-rolled and cold-drawn square bars have a natural corner radius. Perfectly sharp corners normally require machining or grinding.

3. What is the benefit of cold-drawn square bar?

Cold drawing improves dimensional consistency and surface finish and can raise strength through cold work. It may also introduce residual stress that matters during heavy machining.

4. Can 303 square bar be welded?

303 is not recommended for routine welding because sulfur improves machinability but can promote hot cracking. A different grade is usually selected when welding is required.

5. Can square bar be cut into short blanks?

Yes. Saw-cut blanks can be supplied with agreed length tolerance, burr removal and identification by heat number.

6. Can you machine keyways or holes?

Milling, drilling, tapping and keyway processing can be arranged from drawings. Finished tolerances should be stated separately from raw-stock tolerances.

7. Which grade is best for high-strength square parts?

17-4PH is commonly considered where higher strength is required. The final condition, such as H900 or H1150, must be selected according to strength and toughness needs.

8. How is straightness checked?

Straightness can be checked using a surface plate, straightedge or roll measurement method. The acceptance value and gauge length must be agreed in the order.

9. Can square bar be polished?

Yes. Mechanical polishing or brushing is available, but the process can slightly affect edge definition and final dimensions.

10. What documents are available?

MTC 3.1, dimensional reports, PMI reports, hardness results and third-party inspection can be supplied when included in the order.
