The 3100-MCM module is a module which provides a Modbus communication interface for /Rockwell Automation 1771 platforms. It supports the PLC 5, PLC 2, and PLC 3 series modules. The 3100-MCM module is ATEX and CSA SB certified. The 3100-MCM module can be installed in the local rack or it can be installed in a remote rack by using the Remote I/O. The 3100-MCM module is comprised of a microcontroller which controls the backplane communication, DUART communication, data transfer from the module to a PLC, and LED status indicators and interface circuitry which support the RS-232, RS-422, and RS-485 protocols.

The 3100-MCM module can function as either a Modbus master or a Modbus slave unit. Each module supports 2 serial interfaces. The modules support the transfer and storage of up to 4000 registers, movement of multiple data types including binary, integer, and floating-point data, RS-232C handshaking for SCADA, RS-422/RS-485 multi-drop with up to 32 slave units (per port), packet radios, and satellite support and software configuration. The backplane current draw of the 3100-MCM module is 0.65 Amps at 5 Volts DC. The operating temperature is from 0 to 60 degrees Celsius and the storage temperature is from -40 to 85 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity of the area around the module should be between 5 and 95%. The physical ports available on the module are 2 DB25 female connectors. The battery for the 3100-MCM module is non-rechargeable and it is replaceable. The batteries are 3.6 Volts lithium-thionyl-chloride size 1/2AA batteries. The shelf life of the batteries is 10 years at 68 degrees Fahrenheit. The operational shock rating for the module is 30 G while the non-operational shock rating is 50 G.
