The BYD Song PLUS Engine Skid Plate is an underbody protection accessory developed specifically for this vehicle model. Installed beneath the engine and transmission, it effectively prevents damage to the oil pan, transmission housing, and electric motor caused by bottoming out and gravel impacts.

Safety Precautions

NEV Chassis Safety Red Line: The Song PLUS DM-i has a high-voltage battery pack flat-mounted on the chassis. Never place the jack on the battery pack casing, plastic side skirts, exhaust pipe, or suspension arms. Any compression deformation of the battery casing may damage high-voltage insulation, resulting in expensive repairs not covered by warranty.

Correct Jack Points: Located on both sides of the chassis under the doors, near the front and rear wheels, marked with notched thick metal ridges—4 points in total. The jack saddle must fully engage the notch without slipping.

Installation Steps

Step 1: Lift the Vehicle

Park the vehicle on flat, hard ground. Engage the electronic parking brake and shift to P. Use a lift or jack to raise the vehicle to a suitable height for underbody access.

Step 2: Confirm Installation Sequence

Song PLUS DM-i multi-piece skid plates have a fixed installation sequence: First install the battery skid plate, second the engine skid plate, third the body skid plate, fourth the fuel tank skid plate, fifth the center wiring skid plate. If installing only the engine skid plate, this step can be skipped, but be aware of the sequence requirements when installing other plates later.

Step 3: Remove Original Plastic Skid Plate Screws

The Song PLUS comes with a plastic splash guard from the factory. It is usually not necessary to completely remove the original plastic guard. Simply loosen or remove the retaining screws to mount the aluminum skid plate on the outside or inside.

Outside Mounting Method: Place the aluminum skid plate over the original plastic guard and reinstall the screws. This method is simple to perform, with the original plastic guard on the inside acting as a buffer.

Inside Mounting Method: Install the aluminum skid plate inside the original plastic guard. This way, no added component is visible from outside, while the plastic guard remains as the outermost layer for minor scrapes.

Step 4: Install Mounting Brackets and Screws

Critical Step: Some mounting points require installing extension brackets or clips first. When installing the engine skid plate, two clips at the very edge need to be removed, then secured with self-tapping screws. Where screw holes have depth, the supplied extension pieces must be threaded on first to extend the mounting point by about 2 cm.

Step 5: Hand-Tighten All Screws (Do Not Fully Tighten)

Core Principle: Thread all screws first, do not tighten any of them. Once all screws are in place, tighten them uniformly. This ensures the skid plate holes align perfectly with the chassis mounting points, preventing misalignment of other holes caused by tightening one screw too early.

Step 6: Install Washers to Prevent Noise

Important Note: For metal skid plates against the metal chassis, it is recommended to add washers on the mounting screws. Direct metal-to-metal contact can cause rattling noise over time, and washers effectively eliminate this.

Step 7: Tighten All Screws

After confirming all screws are threaded, tighten them one by one in a diagonal sequence. Apply even force, especially above the battery pack where the aluminum material can easily strip or break screws if over-tightened.

Step 8: Inspection and Road Test

Lower the vehicle and check that the skid plate is securely installed with no looseness. Start the vehicle and drive at low speed to confirm there is no abnormal vibration or noise.

Important Notes

Differentiate screw lengths: Screws from the original front engine skid plate position can be reused. Black screws are used for side mounting, and longer screws are needed for some positions.

Check ground clearance after installation: Confirm the skid plate does not reduce chassis height or affect vehicle passability.

Professional installation recommended: Involving vehicle lifting and underbody work, it is recommended to complete the installation at a professional repair shop or 4S store. The standard labor time is approximately 0.5 hours.
