Complete Automatic Cartoning Solution for Macaroni and Pasta Products

Part 1: Product Introduction
Complete Automatic Cartoning Solution for Macaroni and Pasta Products

The SieracTech automatic macaroni cartoning packaging line is an integrated secondary-packaging solution developed for continuous industrial pasta production. It can receive products from an upstream pasta processing line, weighing machine, bagging machine, tray sealer, or primary packaging system and automatically complete product organization, counting, grouping, carton loading, carton closing, inspection, case packing, and palletizing.

For short-cut dry pasta such as macaroni, penne, fusilli, elbows, rigatoni, and similar shapes, the feeding section can be designed with controlled conveyors, accumulation systems, vibratory distribution, multi-lane alignment, weighing, counting, or robotic pick-and-place modules. The appropriate handling method depends on whether the pasta is loaded loose into cartons, packed into inner bags, arranged in trays, or supplied as finished primary packs.

The reference cartoning platform uses servo transmission, electronic cam control, PLC logic, photoelectric detection, and automatic interlocks. It supports functions such as no-product/no-carton control, fault display, production counting, alarm management, optional leaflet insertion, coding, rejection, and hot-melt-glue sealing.

A robotic loading system can be incorporated where multiple pasta packs must be oriented and grouped before loading. Vision-guided parallel robots identify product position and orientation, transmit coordinate information to the robot controller, and perform accurate high-speed picking and placement. This configuration is particularly suitable for irregular product arrival, multiple lanes, changing pack orientations, or carton patterns requiring alternating product direction.

The complete line is designed to reduce manual product handling, improve repeatability, provide centralized production control, and support future capacity expansion. Individual machines can operate independently or communicate through a coordinated line-control system.

Key Line Characteristics
  • High level of automation: Automatic product detection, grouping, carton forming, loading, closing, coding, inspection, case packing, and palletizing reduce dependence on repetitive manual operations.
  • High-speed production: The reference STL-S100 cartoner is designed for production speeds of up to 75 cartons per minute. Actual output depends on pasta type, carton size, units per carton, feeding stability, inspection time, and downstream capacity.
  • Reduced labor requirements: Robotic handling, automatic carton loading, automatic case packing, and palletizing replace several manual transfer, counting, packing, and stacking operations.
  • Modular construction: Each functional station can be selected according to the project scope. The customer can begin with feeding and cartoning and later add vision inspection, metal detection, case packing, labeling, or palletizing.
  • Food-industry hygiene design: Product-contact components can be manufactured from food-compatible materials, while open-frame construction, accessible guards, clean conveyor surfaces, and removable product guides simplify cleaning and inspection.
  • Upstream and downstream integration: The line can exchange production, alarm, interlock, recipe, and status signals with pasta processing systems, multihead weighers, bagging machines, checkweighers, metal detectors, case packers, warehouse systems, MES platforms, and factory supervisory systems.

Part 2: Applicable Products
Pasta Products That Can Be Packed

The line can be engineered for a wide range of dry, instant, and pre-packed pasta products.

ProductRecommended Handling MethodEngineering Notes
SpaghettiLong-pasta alignment, bundling, tray or bag handlingRequires a dedicated long-product feeding and alignment system
LinguineLane alignment, bundling, or pre-packed pouch loadingProduct-length and breakage control must be considered
PenneWeighing, counting, bag loading, or grouped-carton loadingSuitable for short-cut pasta handling systems
FusilliWeighing, multi-lane feeding, or pre-packed pouch loadingProduct shape requires controlled transfer to prevent bridging
MacaroniCounting, weighing, collation, or robotic loadingCore application for the proposed line
Elbow MacaroniWeighing or grouped-pack loadingBulk density and carton fill pattern must be validated
RigatoniCounting, weighing, or tray loadingLarge-diameter pieces may require wider transfer lanes
Instant PastaCup, tray, pouch, or inner-pack cartoningOften requires product-orientation inspection
Fresh PastaSealed tray or pouch cartoningNormally requires primary packaging and chilled-area design
Dry PastaLoose fill, inner-bag cartoning, tray cartoning, or pouch cartoningMost suitable for standard industrial line configurations
Gluten-Free PastaDedicated or validated contact-path configurationAllergen-control and cleaning procedures should be specified
Organic PastaStandard dry-pasta configurationTraceability and product-segregation functions can be added
Important Application Consideration

Short-cut dry pasta and long pasta require different feeding principles. Spaghetti and linguine normally require lengthwise alignment and breakage-sensitive handling, while macaroni, penne, and fusilli are more commonly managed through weighing, counting, vibratory feeding, multi-lane conveying, or inner-pack handling.

Fresh pasta is generally not loaded directly into an unsealed paperboard carton. It is normally sealed in a pouch or tray before cartoning because of moisture, shelf-life, and hygiene requirements.
