Precision 5 Axis CNC Turn Mill Aerospace Engine Components Prototype Wear Resistance

Custom 5-Axis CNC Machined Aerospace Cylindrical Housing Component

This precision aerospace cylindrical housing component is manufactured using 5-axis CNC machining, featuring a long cylindrical body, precision internal bore, stepped flange structures, integrated mounting ears and multiple precision mounting holes.

The combination of deep internal geometry, cylindrical surfaces and multi-angle mounting features makes this component more challenging than a conventional turned part. 5-axis CNC machining enables multiple angular features to be completed with fewer setups, helping reduce accumulated positioning errors and maintain the dimensional relationship between critical bores, flange surfaces and mounting holes.

Designed for aerospace and high-performance mechanical applications, this type of precision machined housing is suitable for structural assemblies, precision equipment, aerospace mechanisms and other custom OEM components where dimensional stability, surface quality and machining consistency are critical.

5-Axis CNC Machining Process

The geometry of this aerospace component requires more than simple cylindrical turning. Several critical features are positioned at different orientations, creating challenges in tool accessibility, concentricity, positional accuracy and fixture stability.

Our 5-axis machining process is developed around the actual part geometry and drawing requirements.

1. Engineering & Process Planning

The 2D drawing and 3D CAD model are reviewed before production. Critical dimensions, datum references, bore relationships, mounting-hole positions and machining allowances are identified to establish the machining sequence.

2. Precision Workholding

A dedicated or optimized fixture is used to maintain stable positioning of the cylindrical component during machining. The goal is to minimize unnecessary repositioning and maintain the relationship between the main bore, flange surfaces and mounting features.

3. 5-Axis Rough Machining

Material is efficiently removed from the cylindrical body, flange areas and complex external features. Controlled machining parameters are used to maintain rigidity and reduce vibration during material removal.

4. Multi-Angle 5-Axis Machining

The integrated mounting ears, angled surfaces, side holes and other non-standard features are machined using simultaneous 5-axis tool movement. This allows the cutting tool to approach difficult surfaces from optimized angles while reducing the need for multiple fixtures.

5. Precision Bore & Critical Feature Finishing

The internal bore, stepped internal geometry and critical mating surfaces receive finishing operations to achieve the required dimensional accuracy and surface quality. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the internal bore and external reference surfaces.

6. Final Inspection

Critical dimensions are inspected according to the customer drawing. Depending on project requirements, inspection can include CMM measurement, dimensional inspection, bore measurement and surface-finish verification.

Where Is the Machining Difficulty?

The main challenge of this component is not simply machining a cylindrical shape.

The difficulty comes from combining several precision features into one component:

Long cylindrical geometry + deep internal bore + stepped flange + integrated mounting ears + multi-angle holes.

For conventional machining, these features may require several setups and different machining orientations. Every additional setup introduces the possibility of positioning deviation.

With 5-axis CNC machining, multiple angled features can be processed while maintaining a controlled relationship with the primary datum and cylindrical axis. This is particularly important when the component is used as part of a larger aerospace assembly.

Key Manufacturing Techniques
Precision Datum Control

Primary datums are established early in the machining process to control the relationship between critical features.

Multi-Axis Tool Orientation

The cutting tool can continuously change orientation to access complex surfaces and improve cutting conditions.

Deep Bore Machining

Specialized tooling and controlled machining parameters are used for deep internal features to minimize vibration and maintain bore accuracy.

Controlled Material Removal

Roughing and finishing operations are separated to reduce machining stress and improve dimensional stability.

Integrated Feature Machining

Where the geometry allows, multiple features are machined within the same setup to reduce cumulative positioning errors.

Precision Inspection

Critical dimensions and geometric relationships are verified according to customer drawings and inspection requirements.
