ASTM A403 WP347H-S 90° Long Radius Elbow Butt Weld Fitting for Elevated-Temperature Process Piping

ASTM A403 WP347H-S 90° Long Radius Elbow | UNS S34709 Seamless Butt Weld Fitting

ASTM A403 WP347H-S 90° Long Radius Elbow | UNS S34709 Seamless Butt Weld Fitting

Product Overview

The ASTM A403 WP347H-S 90° Long Radius Elbow is a wrought austenitic stainless steel butt weld fitting manufactured from UNS S34709 / Type 347H.

The WP347H-S designation identifies a WP-grade fitting manufactured in the seamless class. This makes the product particularly suitable for piping systems where the fitting specification, construction class and dimensional standard need to be clearly defined. ASTM A403 covers wrought austenitic stainless steel fittings for pressure piping applications.

The 90° long-radius configuration changes the piping direction while maintaining a larger centerline radius than a short-radius elbow. The fitting can be supplied to ASME B16.9 dimensional requirements or project-specific specifications.

WP347H is a high-carbon version of stabilized 347 austenitic stainless steel. Its chemistry is designed for applications where elevated-temperature service and resistance to sensitization-related issues are important considerations.

The stabilized 347 family uses niobium (columbium) rather than titanium as the stabilizing element. This distinction makes WP347H different from grades such as TP321H.

For projects involving elevated-temperature piping, the actual operating temperature, pressure, welding procedure and applicable design code should be evaluated when selecting between 347H, 321H and other austenitic grades.

90° Long Radius Geometry

The long-radius elbow provides a 90-degree change in flow direction with a centerline radius generally associated with the long-radius configuration.

Typical dimensional parameters include:

  • Nominal Pipe Size
  • Outside Diameter
  • Wall Thickness
  • Center-to-End Dimension
  • End Outside Diameter
  • Bevel Geometry
  • Ovality
  • Angular Alignment

Dimensions can be supplied according to ASME B16.9 or customer drawings.

Why WP347H-S?
  • Seamless Fitting Construction - The S class identifies seamless construction under the WP fitting classification. ASTM A403 uses WP class designations to distinguish fitting construction and applicable nondestructive examination requirements.
  • Stabilized Austenitic Grade - The 347H alloy system uses niobium stabilization, making it a suitable candidate for selected elevated-temperature piping applications.
  • Long Radius Flow Geometry - The long-radius configuration provides a gradual directional transition compared with a short-radius elbow.
  • Butt Weld Connection - The beveled ends are prepared for direct butt welding to compatible pipe or other butt weld fittings.
  • Project-Specific Manufacturing - Size, wall thickness, end preparation, heat treatment and inspection requirements can be coordinated according to the applicable piping specification.
Typical Applications

Rather than positioning WP347H-S simply as a general-purpose stainless steel elbow, the following applications are more technically relevant:

  • High-Temperature Process Piping
  • Petrochemical Process Lines
  • Chemical Processing Equipment
  • Refinery Piping Systems
  • Furnace-Related Piping
  • Thermal Processing Systems
  • High-Temperature Steam Lines
  • Power Generation Piping
  • Heat Transfer Systems
  • Industrial Process Equipment
Typical Equipment
  • Process Piping Assemblies
  • Refinery Process Units
  • Chemical Processing Skids
  • High-Temperature Steam Systems
  • Furnace Piping
  • Heat Transfer Equipment
  • Petrochemical Process Equipment
  • Power Plant Auxiliary Piping

Manufacturing Process

The fitting manufacturing route can involve controlled forming operations followed by heat treatment and dimensional finishing.

Typical production stages include:

  1. Raw Material Verification
  2. Tube or Billet Preparation
  3. Controlled Forming
  4. Heat Treatment
  5. End Beveling
  6. Dimensional Calibration
  7. Surface Inspection
  8. Nondestructive Examination
  9. Final Dimensional Inspection
  10. Marking and Packaging

ASTM A403 requires fittings to undergo heat treatment and includes requirements for chemical analysis, mechanical properties and visual examination.

Inspection & Testing

Available inspection documents may include:

  • Chemical Composition Analysis
  • Mechanical Test Report
  • Tensile Test
  • Yield Strength Test
  • Hardness Test
  • Heat Treatment Record
  • PMI Report
  • Dimensional Inspection Report
  • Visual Inspection Report
  • Liquid Penetrant Testing
  • Ultrasonic Testing
  • Radiographic Testing, when applicable
  • EN 10204 3.1 MTC
  • EN 10204 3.2 Inspection Certificate
  • Third-Party Inspection Report

The applicable NDE method should be specified according to the fitting class and purchase requirements rather than automatically listing every test for every product. ASTM A403 distinguishes WP fitting classes according to construction and NDE requirements.
