Felt Acoustic Backing Panels Hidden Absorption Behind Perforated Surfaces

Felt acoustic backing panels are designed to be installed behind perforated metal, wood, or gypsum surfaces to provide the hidden absorption layer that turns a decorative perforated panel into a high-performance acoustic element. Manufactured from 100% recycled polyester fiber and thermally bonded without formaldehyde or chemical binders, the backing panel is placed directly behind the perforated facing material. Sound passes through the holes in the decorative face and is absorbed by the felt. The backing panel achieves its full NRC potential of up to 0.95 in this configuration, with the air gap between the perforated face and the felt enhancing low-frequency performance. The felt is non-shedding, dimensionally stable, and will not slump or settle behind the facing. It meets Class B1 fire safety standards and carries OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certification. For architects and fabricators who want to create custom acoustic panels using a decorative perforated surface of their choice, the felt backing provides the essential absorptive component.

Custom perforated panels offer unlimited design possibilities, from laser-cut metal screens to routed wood panels. However, a perforated panel alone does not absorb sound effectively unless there is an absorptive material behind the holes. Felt acoustic backing panels provide this missing layer in a clean, easy-to-install format. The fabricator or installer simply places the felt behind the decorative face before fixing the assembly to the wall or ceiling. The result is a custom acoustic panel that combines the desired aesthetic with verified acoustic performance. This approach is widely used in lobby feature walls, auditorium paneling, and custom ceiling elements where the visual design of the perforated surface is central to the architectural concept.

Behind custom perforated metal panels in lobbies and atriums, behind routed or drilled wood acoustic panels, within custom ceiling clouds and baffles, behind perforated gypsum board in auditoriums, and within any custom acoustic assembly where a decorative perforated face is specified.

Sound passes through the open area of the perforated face and strikes the felt backing. The felt fibers absorb the energy through frictional damping. The air gap between the perforated face and the felt contributes additional absorption at lower frequencies due to the Helmholtz resonance effect created by the perforations acting as many small cavities.

Determine the thickness of the felt based on the desired absorption. For general speech-range absorption, 12mm is sufficient. For broader absorption including some low-frequency control, choose 15mm or 24mm. Ensure the open area of your perforated face is at least 20 percent for the felt to function effectively. Polyester Fiber Acoustic Panel 9mm consist largely of recycled PET bottles. The felt panels are 9 mm thick and measure 244 x 122 cm. Thanks to their light weight and easy processing, the panels are suitable for a wide range of applications. To increase the sound absorbing effect of the panels, we recommend an air cavity and/or a combination of PET felt 9 mm panels and polyester wool.
