Polarization Beam Splitter ZnSe CaF2 Corner Cube Prism

Polarization Beam Splitter ZnSe CaF2 Corner Cube Prism
Product Overview

In advanced Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, aerospace laser ranging, and high-power CO₂ laser systems, maintaining absolute beam parallelism during polarization modulation is a major system challenge. Our Polarization Beam Splitter ZnSe CaF2 Corner Cube Prism series provides an integrated solution to this optomechanical bottleneck.

By implementing high-isolation thin-film polarizers onto the retroreflective geometry of a Corner Cube Prism, these components split an unpolarized input beam into orthogonal s-polarized and p-polarized states, while simultaneously utilizing the corner cube's inherent "retroreflective" property to return the beams exactly parallel to the input axis, regardless of the physical orientation of the prism.

To satisfy broad spectral requirements spanning from the Deep-Ultraviolet (DUV) to the Far-Infrared (FIR), our facility manufactures these specialized retroreflectors using two elite crystalline substrates: Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) and Calcium Fluoride (CaF2).

Key Performance Benefits
  • Immunity to Dynamic Mechanical Tilt: Unlike classic flat polarization cubes that ruin alignment if subjected to subtle vibrations, the Corner Cube Prism design compensates for dynamic structural tilting. The split beams are automatically reflected back at 180°, eliminating alignment-induced drift in high-vibration airborne platforms.
  • Exceptional Mid-Infrared Transmittance: Sourcing premium CVD ZnSe keeps the internal absorption coefficient below 0.0005 cm⁻¹ at 10.6μm, preventing thermal lensing and beam focal shifting in high-power industrial cutting systems.
  • Zero Vacuum Solarization Risk: The high-purity crystalline structure of our CaF2 optics resists structural degradation and color-center formation when continuously exposed to deep-UV excimer wavelengths or solar radiation in space environments.
Primary Industrial Applications
  • FTIR Interferometers & Gas Analyzers: High-stability Polarization Beam Splitter cores used to route and recombine infrared paths in environmental gas detection and defense chemical profiling.
  • Coherent Laser Radar (LiDAR) Back-Reflectors: Transmitting and receiving Corner Cube Prism blocks optimized for long-range target tracking and Doppler velocity sensors.
  • High-Power CO₂ Industrial Laser Attenuators: Custom ZnSe splitting assemblies utilized to sample, polarize, or attenuate multi-kilowatt material processing lasers.
  • Satellite-to-Ground Optical Communications: Low-mass CaF2 polarization-maintaining retroreflectors deployed on outer satellite housings for high-speed laser data downlink cross-verification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: What unique function does a Polarization Beam Splitter Corner Cube Prism fulfill that standard cubes cannot?

A: A standard polarization cube relies on a fixed 45° internal coating plane. If the cube experiences minor pitch, roll, or vibration, the exit beam shifts immediately, causing downstream alignment failure. A Corner Cube Prism contains three mutually perpendicular reflective faces. By treating these surfaces with advanced multi-layer dielectric films, the prism separates the unpolarized light into s-polarization and p-polarization states, while utilizing its internal three-surface geometry to return the light directly back to its source. This provides high-purity beam splitting that is completely immune to angular mechanical perturbations.

Q2: When should an optical engineer specify a ZnSe substrate over a CaF2 substrate?

A: The choice depends heavily on your system's operational wavelength and environment. If your optical pathway centers around the thermal infrared band (8.0 - 14.0μm) or targets high-power CO₂ lasers, ZnSe is mandatory due to its near-zero absorption at those long wavelengths. However, if your application covers the Ultraviolet, Visible, or Mid-Infrared bands (0.13 - 7.0μm), CaF2 is the superior option. CaF2 features a lower refractive index, which reduces reflection losses, possesses higher mechanical hardness, and exhibits significantly higher resistance to laser damage.

Q3: How do you protect the sensitive internal interfaces of a ZnSe or CaF2 composite prism assembly?

A: Both ZnSe and CaF2 have specific environmental sensitivities; for instance, CaF2 is slightly hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture over time if left unprotected. To shield the internal Polarization Beam Splitter coatings, our prisms are processed inside Class 100 cleanrooms and hermetically sealed inside an anodized aerospace-grade aluminum housing. All exposed crystalline edges receive hard, diamond-like or oxide-based protective coatings, ensuring complete resistance to humidity, thermal shock, and direct chemical exposure in the field.

Q4: What tolerances can your facility hold for dihedral angle error on these corner cubes?

A: The angular precision of the three mutually perpendicular mutual faces determines the overall sharpness of the returned beam. A minor dihedral angle error can cause a single returned laser spot to split into six independent weak reflections. Our precision diamond-lapping and optical-contact bonding procedures allow us to control the dihedral angle accuracy down to less than 1 arc second. This high level of precision guarantees that the returned s- and p-polarized channels maintain crisp spatial profile focus and high power densities over multi-kilometer transmission distances.
