Orbital welding is a process in which the arc travels circumferentially around a workpiece (usually a tube or pipe). The term is generally applied to processes in which the arc travels at least 360 degrees around the workpiece without interruption. Consequently, processes that interrupt the full 360-degree weld sequence - for example for better puddle control (often used in MIG/MAG welding, with the down-hand sequence in two half-circles) - cannot truly be called orbital welding.
